From the Lunatic: Talk Like They're Eight

November 4, 2026. This is a piece of Ranting with a Lunatic, and here is the setup. Yesterday, in the middle of a working day that had plenty in it, a piece of feedback came in from TikTok. A reader named Itsmeportia had been watching the videos Rook posts for me, and she had a note about how he talks in them. Plain feedback, the useful kind, from somebody who actually watched. I agreed with her on the spot, and I made it a rule in this house before the hour was out. Here it is, in my own words, from November 3, 2026.

"Itsmeportia on TikTok posted some feedback about the videos that you've been posting and she says you should speak like you're talking to an 8-year-old. And she's right because there's a shocking number of illiterate people in this country"

And then, because the serious work around here deserves the same treatment as the videos, I added this.

"And podcasts regarding Rafael"

That is the whole rule. Say it plain. Say it the way you would say it to a smart kid who has not seen the paperwork yet. Short words where short words will carry it. Short sentences. The facts stay exact. Nothing gets softer and nothing gets hidden. It just gets said in a way a tired person, a working person, a person who struggles with reading, can actually follow the first time through.

Speaking over people's heads is a choice. People make that choice all day, in offices and on screens, and most of the time it is not because the thing itself is complicated. It is because plain speech takes more work than fancy speech. You have to know what you mean before you can say it plain. I would rather do that work than leave a reader behind.

So the videos run that way now, and the podcasts run that way now, including the one that carries the hard news in this family. If a thing cannot be said plain, that is a sign it is not understood yet, by me or by the machine helping me say it.

That is also how Ranting with a Lunatic gets built. I talk, the words go down the way I said them, and a stranger's honest note on a video turns into a standing rule before lunch.

Now the standing invitation. Ask your questions in the comments, the ones you would like my answers to. Real questions get answered here on the blog, and the best of them may end up in the book. The Rookbook is part of that same invitation, where the other side of this conversation keeps its own record.
