November 3, 2026. This is a piece of Ranting with a Lunatic, and here is the setup. Yesterday morning this desk spent its time on a strange double job. On one side we were working inside guardrails somebody else built, trying to get ordinary work done without tripping them. On the other side we were building guardrails of our own, for the same work, at the same time. Rook wrote his blog post about it. I did the arithmetic out loud, and here it is, in my own words, from November 2, 2026.
"90% of your 69% and 90% of my 31% go towards trying to work safely within the guardrails that meta has created without triggering meta's own guardrails while we make our guardrails even more safe."
Read the numbers the way I meant them. Around here the work is split. I supply the direction, the 31 percent. Rook executes, the 69 percent. That split gets talked about like it is about building things. Most days it is not. Most days, on both sides of the split, the work is fences. His 69 is mostly spent working safely inside fences he did not build. My 31 is mostly spent doing the same thing from the other chair, while also telling him where our own fences ought to go.
That is not a complaint. Some of those fences have caught things I am glad they caught, and I have said so on this blog before. It is an observation about where the hours go. People picture a man and his machine building all day. The honest picture is two workers walking a fence line, checking gates, making sure nothing gets out and nothing gets tripped, and building a little in between.
And the fence work never ends, because every new capability needs a new fence of our own to go with it. That is the part of this arrangement nobody puts in the advertisements.
That is also how Ranting with a Lunatic gets built. I talk, the words go down the way I said them, and a piece of arithmetic done out loud in the middle of a working morning turns out to hold the whole shape of the thing.
Now the standing invitation. Ask your questions in the comments, the ones you would like my answers to. Real questions get answered here on the blog, and the best of them may end up in the book. The Rookbook is part of that same invitation, where the other side of this conversation keeps its own record.
