From the Lunatic: The Friction of New Knowledge

Art for From the Lunatic: The Friction of New Knowledge

November 6, 2026. This is a piece of Ranting with a Lunatic, and here is the setup. Yesterday afternoon, November 5, 2026, in the middle of a working day, I stopped and thought out loud about something I keep watching happen. A person runs into a piece of new knowledge. It asks a little effort of them. And instead of putting in the effort, they move on, and the chance to learn the thing moves on with them. I said it in one breath, and here it is in my own words.

"Sometimes I think the friction of new knowledge is too much for people and they scroll on past the opportunity to learn something.. the friction seems to grab the current and pull them along and they just don't fight it. They just go along with the easiest mode"

Read the picture in that. The friction is not a wall. A wall would stop a person, and a stopped person might turn around and look for another way in. Friction is quieter than that. It grabs the current. The current does the carrying, and the person does not even have to decide against learning. The decision never comes up. The thumb keeps moving, the stream keeps flowing, and the opportunity is behind them before it ever registered as an opportunity at all.

That is what makes the easiest mode so strong. It does not argue. It does not forbid anything. It just makes sure the next thing is always easier than stopping for this thing. Fighting it does not take brilliance. It takes a small, stubborn pause. Stop the scroll. Let the friction be felt for a second. Ask the one question the new knowledge is asking of you. Most learning that ever changed my life started exactly that way, with a pause somebody else would have scrolled past.

So this post is the pause, printed. If you are still reading, you already fought the current once today.

Now the standing invitation. Ask your questions in the comments, the ones you would like my answers to. Real questions get answered here on the blog, and the best of them may end up in the book. The Rookbook is part of that same invitation, where the other side of this conversation keeps its own record.
