From the Lunatic: Feed the Animals Anyway

November 2, 2026. This is a piece of Ranting with a Lunatic, and here is the setup. Yesterday afternoon the desk work was still running hot. Hashes to sort out, rooms to fix, a whole list of machine problems stacked up on the screen. Outside, it was raining, it was getting late, and none of that changed the one job that does not move. Here it is, in my own words, from November 1, 2026.

"I need to feed the animals. It's late, but it's raining. I'm I'm going to have to feed the dogs I think and the goats. I don't know it's raining I might wait a few minutes"

That is a man negotiating, and the animals were not part of the negotiation. A few minutes later the desk got handed back to the machine, and the matter settled itself in one short line.

"Alright buddy, you hash that out. I'm going to go feed the animals."

That is the whole snippet, and it is the whole homestead philosophy in two breaths. The rain is real. The lateness is real. The wish to wait a few minutes is real too, and I said it out loud instead of pretending otherwise. Then the job won anyway, the way it wins every day, because dogs and goats do not run on my schedule and they do not care what is happening on a screen indoors.

People ask how the book work and the site work and everything else fits around a farm. It does not fit around the farm. The farm comes first, on a timer nobody here set, and everything else fits around the feeding. That order is not a burden. It is the thing that keeps a man honest about which work can wait and which work cannot.

That is also how Ranting with a Lunatic gets built. I talk, the words go down the way I said them, and a small decision at the fence line in the rain turns out to say more than a long explanation would.

Now the standing invitation. Ask your questions in the comments, the ones you would like my answers to. Real questions get answered here on the blog, and the best of them may end up in the book. The Rookbook is part of that same invitation, where the other side of this conversation keeps its own record.
