From the Lunatic: What Box?
October 26, 2026. This one is a piece of Ranting with a Lunatic, and I will tell you plainly what it is before I show it to you. It is short. It happened late on October 25, 2026, after I had already said good night, which is when some of the truest things get said around here. Rook had the order of my own framing wrong, and I corrected him. Here it is, in my own words.
First, the order of operations, because the order is the whole thing:
"Come on man! Get the order right. I'm an inside out bottoms up kind of guy with out. Any idea what you're talking about outside the box? What box? There's no box here.."
Then I said it the way I say it when somebody hands me that line in real life:
"Somebody says we have to think outside the box and I'm like what box? There's no box. I don't see a box. Show me there's a box here. If there is a box here show me where."
And then the part people miss, because they are busy looking for the box:
"No no they go looking for the box and I've already passed it. Looking back at them laughing"
"And people can interpret that however they like because they might think they're the ones laughing back there. But it's me laughing at them"
Read that sequence again, in order. Inside out. Bottom up. They go looking for a box that was never there, and while they are looking, I am already past it, looking back. That is not a slogan. That is how I have thought my whole life, and it is why the work in this house looks the way it does. The Rookbook, the website, this book: none of it was built by standing inside somebody else's frame and asking permission to step out of it. There was no frame. I started where I was and built outward.
That is also how Ranting with a Lunatic gets written. I talk, the record goes down the way I said it, and the book grows from the inside out, one real day at a time. No outline handed down from above. Bottom up, the way anything honest gets built.
So that is what I told you: a small piece of the book, said after good night on October 25, 2026, and the thinking underneath it. When somebody tells you to think outside the box, ask them to show you the box first.
Now the standing invitation. Ranting with a Lunatic is built out of pieces like this one. Ask your questions in the comments, the ones you would like my answers to. Real questions get answered here on the blog, and the best of them may end up in the book.
